AITA - I said no to giving my friend's boyfriend $2500 and my identity AITA - My friend's boyfriend called me in the middle of the night to ask for a $2500 "investment" to sports bet in my name

I was woken up by a call from a number I didn't recognize and was immediately texted by said number saying that it was my friend's boyfriend asking me to call him back for something that was "time sensitive" and "urgent". There's a wedding in the friend group this weekend so I thought he was going to ask what I thought of proposing at the wedding (which for obvious reasons would've been a definitive no from me). My other thought was that something bad happened to my friend.

Fast forward to the next morning. I called him back and say "Hi" when he answers. He immediately says I sound like my friend's sister. He then asks me if I know what he does for work, to which I say that I have absolutely no idea He proceeds to tell me that he sports bets for a living but that when you are really good at sports betting and win a lot you will get banned from the different books. He went on to say how he got all of his family member's and my friend's accounts banned.

It can't be true that you get banned from being good at gambling, can it? Long story short, he essentially wanted me to give him my iPad or a device to access fan duel or other sports books (we live close by) with $2500 deposited. He said that we would split the earnings and that he could easily turn into $40k+. He then said that if I didn't have $2500 on hand that he or his girlfriend (my friend) could probably lend it to me. He said if I'm skeptical to ask my friend about it. He said it was "t

He also tried to make me feel bad by saying that as a white girl I'd get banned a lot less fast than him or any of his Asian family members. He has not worked a formal job in about 3 years since he quit his job at a well known finance firm in NYC due to "abusive work conditions". My friend hasn't worked a job in about 8 months since she quit for similar reasons. Graduates of Ivy League colleges and just moved into a new apartment in NYC.

I essentially told him no and he said "Aw okay no worries no pressure, I will reach back out in a month to see if you changed your mind." I never had an issue with my friend or her boyfriend at all before and actually really enjoyed them. - Am I the a h le for saying no?

DancinginHyrule • 3h ago. Absolutely NTA and do NOT do that! 1. what he's suggesting is identity fraud 2. he's never going to make that profit 3. how can he lend you the money for the deposite if he needs you to put down the deposite? He's a gambling addict that's lost everything and is combing through his social network for cash.

Ask yourself, does this friend of yours live like they can make 40K in a few days in general? I highly doubt it.

I've never used online gambling but you have to assume that money laundering checks are in place so you'd have to record all your details (SS, DOB, passport/driving licence, utility bills in your name showing your address, valid email etc.) along with a bank account from which

the funds are drawn and go through a protracted confirmation process. With your identity he could run up a huge line of credit (or draw from the original financial source) and because he's using your iPad and your identity it would be traced back to you and not him.
  • 12
You'd have a very hard time contesting it and any financial institution would probably deny any claims based purely on the fact you authorised him to use it. God knows what it could do to your credit but it wouldn't be good and the word bankruptcy comes to mind.

I'd say, at best, he's hit a huge losing streak and at worst he's a total scammer. No one wins that big, that consistently unless they have insider information. I strong suspect that any exchange of monies would be cash so that it's untraceable to him, leaving you further in the doodoo. That type of thing leads to prosecution and prison time.

Whilst it is true that you can be banned from sports books in the same way casinos ban customers who win more than lose he obviously needs to find some other way to earn money. Even if you were to think about doing it for a close friend you've known for years and trust implicitly you do not know this man. At all. Do not do this. NTA

Shadow4summer • 3h ago NTA. I would also be very upset that my friend gave him my number. I would be having a conversation with them, like right now. People can't be giving out your number like that.

BaronFantastic 3h ago • NTA. If he were really good at Sports Betting, he wouldn't need your $2500 to use.

Excellent_Treat_3842 • 3h ago NTA - he sounds like an addict. I'd establish some very firm boundaries.

ChiWhiteSox24 2h ago . - • NTA gambling addict that dropped to negative balances on his accounts. You don't get banned for winning too much. It also is a violation of the apps terms of service for not being the main account holder when placing the bets. So no wonder everyone's accounts got banned. This is wild haha

Swiss_El_Rosso • 3h ago NTA Bets are not the way to spend money on them, to miss use a ID is also not a way to work with money. Please stay put with your NO.

Perfect_Cookie • 3h ago. NTA He is asking you to do something shady and trying to manipulate you into giving in by playing the race card. He sounds like he might be addicted to gambling. You mentioned he worked in finance and quit his job due to abusive working conditions. I've seen enough in the news that I don't doubt working in finance in NYC takes its toll on the employees - but are

you sure he didn't do something at work related to his gambling that got him fired? Something just shady enough to get fired but not enough to get arrested? I'd tread very carefully with this "friend", and I'd take steps to ensure he can't just go ahead and use your identity without your knowledge/consent. And you should certainly NOT consent.
